Transition to siblinghood in a wild chacma baboon population

چکیده

In monotocous mammals (i.e. where females produce one offspring at a time), most juveniles will experience the birth of younger sibling in their life. Transition to siblinghood (TTS) has rarely been studied primates, although it reflects last step shift maternal investment from next and could thus represent critical moment for mother–offspring conflict competition. Here, we used behavioural data on juvenile primates that had recently experienced, or not, investigate changes mother–juvenile relationships during TTS wild population chacma baboons, Papio ursinus. We show (1) spatial associations remained stable; (2) mothers did not decrease probability initiating proximity affiliation with juvenile; (3) initiated more frequently towards mothers, showed signs anxiety, after sibling. Taken together, these findings suggest solicit mother often seek attention than without. Overall, extend into postweaning period, which subtle resources, such as attention, be stake competitive relationships.

30 Days in the Life: Daily Nutrient Balancing in a Wild Chacma Baboon

For most animals, the ability to regulate intake of specific nutrients is vital to fitness. Recent studies have demonstrated nutrient regulation in nonhuman primates over periods of one observation day, though studies of humans indicate that such regulation extends to longer time frames. Little is known about longer-term regulation in nonhuman primates, however, due to the challenges of multipl...

Mature specimens of Rhinophaga papionis Fain, 1955 were observed exclusively in the maxillary recesses of 29 of 31 chacma baboons (93,6%). They stimulated the formation of inflammatory polyps, which in some cases almost completely...

A radiological method to evaluate alveolar bone regeneration in the Chacma baboon (Papio ursinus).

INTRODUCTION The evaluation of alveolar bone healing may have a role in dental implantology, in prosthodontics in the post-extraction phase and in monitoring fracture repair. There are several radiological techniques described to evaluate alveolar bone regeneration. However, most are expensive and time consuming. OBJECTIVES To develop and evaluate a radiological method utilising readily avail...

The Chacma baboon as an organ donor for man.

Pathological conditions of the intima due to trauma or existing donor pathology can result in arterial thrombosis after transplantation (1). We recently encountered a case where a question was raised about the condition of the donor renal artery, in which angioscopic examination was used to establish that the artery was satisfactory. The kidney was from a 58year-old donor who died of an intracr...

Genetic evidence reveals temporal change in hybridization patterns in a wild baboon population.

The process and consequences of hybridization are of interest to evolutionary biologists because of the importance of hybridization in understanding reproductive isolation, speciation, and the influence of introgression on population genetic structure. Recent studies of hybridization have been enhanced by the advent of sensitive, genetic marker-based techniques for inferring the degree of admix...
